Abstract

Using the old-age pension recipient database of the Korean national pension, this study analyzes mortality differentials by income level. Consistent with previous research in the field of socioeconomic differences in mortality, this study also finds significant mortality differences by income level among the old-age pension recipients. However, in addition to income level, the data indicate that the type of pension benefits also plays a crucial role in mortality. In particular, the data show that early retirement pension recipients are at risk of higher mortality compared to other old-age pension recipients. Given the existence of differential mortality by income level and benefit type, policy implications for pension scheme design are discussed in terms of progressivity and pension eligibility age.
